hashid
Identifies a hash type and gives the hashcat or john mode.
Guesses which algorithm a hash belongs to by looking at its length, charset and prefix (`$1$`, `$2y$`, `$6$`, `aad3b435...`). What matters is not the name but what `-m` and `-j` return: the exact hashcat **mode number** and the john format, which is what you type next. A misidentified hash means half an hour of cracking wasted, so this step comes before launching anything.
